From atmospheric rock-hewn churches to one of the world’s most singular cuisines, Ethiopia offers a wealth of different cultural experiences to interested visitors.

The coffee route into the rainforests that swathe Ethiopia’s western highlands bring the visitor to the original home of coffee and the site of the Mother Coffee Tree, the oldest living plant of its type anywhere in the world.

Ethiopia has three main cultural routes. The northern historic route focusses mainly on Christian and pre-Christian sites, while the eastern route leads you to holy Islamic citadel of Harar, and the southern route explores the animist African cultures of the Omo Valley.

Pancake-like injera, heaped with a tantalisingly spiced selection of vegan or meat dishes, and washed down with honey-derived tej, make Ethiopia a delight for visitors with adventurous palates - though the range of eating and drinkingoptions also embraces many more familiar dishes and drinks.

A host of colourful Christian and Islamic festivals is topped by the Meskel Ceremony held in Addis Ababa or Aksum, and Timkat in Gondar.

A remarkable series of palaeontological discoveries, mostly in the Afar region of the northern Rift Valley, makes it almost certain that Ethiopia was the main crucible of human evolution.

Found all over Ethiopia are a wonderful assembly of timeless and characterful old monasteries, mosques and rock-hewn churches that are still in use, making it one of the world’s top destinations for religious travel.

Markets and craft stalls in Addis Ababa and elsewhere provide a great opportunity to go shopping for high quality crosses, handwoven fabrics and other uniquely Ethiopian handicrafts.

Meskel Celebration - Finding of the True Cross (September 26th and 27th)

Meskel, one of the major Ethiopian Orthodox festivals is celebrated for two days beginning September 26th. Legend has it that in the year 326, Queen Helena (Empress Helen) the Mother of Constantine the Great, discovered the cross upon which Christ was crucified. Unable to find the Holy Sepulchre, she prayed for help and was directed by the smoke from a burning fire as to where the cross was buried. After unearthing the Holy Cross, Queen Helena lit torches heralding her success.  In the Middle Ages, the Patriarch of Alexandria gave the Ethiopian Emperor Dawit half of the True Cross in return for protection afforded to the Coptic Christians. A fragment of the True Cross is reputedly held at the Gishen Mariam, about 70 kilometers northwest of Dessie. Ethiopians have been celebrating this day for millennium. There are two occasions on Meskel. The first is Demera (September 26), in which bonfires are built topped by a cross to which flowers are tied. The flowers are Meskel Daisies. The Patriarch of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church orchestrates the lightening ceremony. After the bonfires are blessed they are lit and dancing and singing begins around them. Priests in full ceremonial dress sing around the bonfire. While the Demera is set on fire there is an inner feeling of brightness for all those who are around it. Little Demera are also built at individual houses or villages. After some time, splinters from the bundles of burning wood collapse. Which directionthey fall is very significant: north, south, east or west Interpretations are soon conjectured as to whether the fields of grain are going to be plentiful or not, or there is peace all year round, etc.  At the closing of the Demera, a rain shower is expected to fall to help put the fire out. If the rain falls and the fire is extinguished, there is a belief that the year will be prosperous.  The day after the Demera is Meskel. This day is observed with plenty of food and drink as believers go to the spot of the Demera and, using ashes from the fire, mark their heads with the sign of the cross. The festival coincides with the mass blooming of the golden yellow Meskel daisies. The best place to see the Meskel Festival is in the all side of Ethiopia.   But  Meskel is colorfully celebrated in the southern Ethiopia in the Dorze Village......

Southern Ethiopia Arba Minch Chamo Lake

Lake Chamo northern end lies in the Nechisar National Park. According to figures published by the Central Statistical Agency, it is 32 kilometers long and 13 wide, with a surface area of 317 square kilometers and a maximum depth of 14 meters with a catchment of about 18757 square kilometers in size. Other sources locate it on an elevation of 1,235 meters with a length of 26 km a widths of 22 km an area of 551 square kilometers a chatchment of 2220 square kilometers and a maximum depth of 10 meters.

The lake is fringed with beds of Typha, as well as wetlands. It is fed by the Kulfo River and several small streams, as well as overflow from Lake Abaya brought to it by the Ualo River. Oscar Neumann, exploring the area in 1901, found a dry channel connecting Lake Chamo to the Sagan River, which led him to conclude the lake contributes to the Sagan in years of heavy rainfall.

Wildlife include fish like the catfish Bagrus docmac and Nile perch, as well as hippopotamus and Nile crocodiles

Ethiopian Coffee

Ethiopia produces some of the most unique and fascinating coffees in the world. The three main regions where Ethiopia coffee beans originate are Harrar, Ghimbi, and Sidamo (Yirgacheffe).

Ethiopian Harrar coffee beans are grown on small farms in the eastern part of the country. They are dry-processed and are labeled as longberry (large), shortberry (smaller), or Mocha (peaberry). Ethiopian Harrar coffee can have a strong dry edge, winy to fruit like acidity, rich aroma, and a heavy body. In the best Harrar coffees, one can observe an intense aroma of blueberries or blackberries. Ethiopian Harrar coffee is often used in espresso blends to capture the fine aromatics in the crema.
Washed coffees of Ethiopia include Ghimbi and Yirgacheffe. Ghimbi coffee beans are grown in the western parts of the country and are more balanced, heavier, and has a longer lasting body than the Harrars.
The Ethiopian Yirgacheffee coffee bean, is the most favored coffee grown in southern Ethiopia. It is more mild, fruitlike, and aromatic. Ethiopian Yirgacheffee coffee may also be labeled as Sidamo, which is the district where it is produced.

Tours in Omo Valley

A tour to the lower Omo Valley usually begins by driving through the Great Rift Valley. You can stop at Lake Chamo and Lake Abaya, which are two of the most popular lakes. Here you will find the majority of your African wildlife to include hippos and crocodiles. You also can visit the Nechisar National Park where you will see zebras and gazelles running wild. While on your tour, you may have the option to visit the Omo National Park and the Mago National Park.

You will also experience the African culture in several of the villages of Omo Valley. Each village has its own unique tribe with their own traditional customs and beliefs.

Dimeka

village is often visited by the Hamar people. The market of Dimeka is colorful Here you will find grain, butter and a local brew being sold,

is the capital of the area. This is a town that can be reached by vehicles or planes. You will also find hotels and a museum dedicated to the Omo Valley tribes. The Mago National Park is located south of the town and is a common tourist attraction.

is a very remote village. Here it is possible to see members of the Ari, Benna and Tsemay tribes.

Konso

Konso village is where the Konso people live. They are best known for their farming skills, totem poles and unique huts. There are several other smaller villages in and around Konso.

Tulgit

is a very remote area where you can find the Suri people. The Mursi and Suri are known for their lip plates and body painting. Most villages here you reached by hiking.

Tour to Omo Valley

Ethiopia’s Omo Valley is one of the most culturally diverse regions in all of Africa. On this trip we head into the villages of the various tribes that make up this kaleidoscope of ethnicity, including the Mursi, Karo, Dassanach, Hamer,Banna, Air,Konso, and others, learning about their complex customs and experiencing a way of life very far removed from the rest of the world.

The star attraction of this tour is the mursi, a tribe of pastoralists in south Omo Valley area. Women of this unique tribe insert very unusual decorative lip plates.

Another distinctive tribe of the South Omo region is the hamer and Banna. They display unique style of body decorations and clothes. Women wear leather skirts with cowry shells and paint their braids with ocre and clay.

Also included is a boat ride on Lake Chamo, inhabited by crocodiles, hippos, and multitude of water birds.
